A practical itinerary for a Friday-to-Sunday ski trip, built around Donner Lake Inn as a quiet base camp 15 minutes from the Donner Summit resorts.

Friday — arrival

  • Drive up. From the Bay Area, plan 3-4 hours via I-80 (longer with weekend ski traffic). From Sacramento, ~2 hours. Take Exit 180 (Donner Lake) and you’re 2 minutes from the inn.
  • Self-check-in. Your keypad door code lets you arrive any time. The Meehan family lives on the property if you need help.
  • Dinner at The Pub at Donner Lake (a half-mile walk from the inn). Craft cocktails, casual American food. Open until 9 PM.
  • Evening. Outdoor creekside hot tub, then settle in by the room’s gas fireplace.

Saturday — ski day

  • 7:30 AM — breakfast. Grab burritos, pastries, fruit, and coffee from the main house foyer on your way out. Get to the slopes early.
  • Pick a resort:
    • Sugar Bowl (~15 min) for terrain variety and tradition
    • Donner Ski Ranch (~15 min) for affordable family skiing
    • Boreal (~15 min) for terrain park and easy access
    • Soda Springs (~15 min) for very young kids and tubing
  • Nordic alternative. Tahoe Donner Cross Country (~12 min) or Royal Gorge (~15 min) for groomed XC skiing.
  • Apres back at the inn. Hot tub, change, relax. Bike and ski storage is available so skis don’t have to come into the room.
  • Dinner in downtown Truckee (~5 min drive). Wide range of options on Donner Pass Road and Brickelltown.
  • EV plugged in overnight if you’re driving electric. Free Level 2 charging is first-come first-served.

Sunday — easy departure

  • Breakfast in the foyer until 9 AM. Linger over coffee.
  • Half-day ski if conditions are good and you don’t have to be home — or walk the Donner Lake shoreline trail and enjoy the snow.
  • Checkout at 10 AM. Drive home via I-80 (or via Old Highway 40 over Donner Pass if you want the scenic route).

Logistics

  • Chain control. Common on I-80 during storms. If you don’t have AWD with snow-rated tires, you’ll need chains. The Donner Lake Gift Shop sells and installs them.
  • Cancellation. 7-day policy — see Booking & Check-in FAQ.
