Donner Lake Inn is one of the few boutique hotels and B&Bs in the Truckee/Donner Lake area built specifically around family lodging — not as a vacation rental, but as a small inn where every room is configured for a family of four or five.

Each of the four Deluxe Suites has:

A Queen bed for parents
A Twin XL bunk bed for kids (Twin XL is 80 inches — comfortable for adult-size guests, too)

The Superior Suite adds a third Twin XL on a triple bunk, sleeping up to five total — popular with families of three children.

History for school-age kids. Donner Memorial State Park and the Emigrant Trail Museum bring 19th-century Sierra Nevada history to life. The Donner Summit railroad tunnels are a one-of-a-kind walkable historic site.

A weekend with kids — sample itinerary

Friday evening: Self-check-in any time. Walk down to The Pub at Donner Lake for dinner (about a half-mile away).

Saturday morning: Grab breakfast in the main house foyer. In winter, drive 15 min to Boreal or Soda Springs for ski lessons. In summer, walk 4 min to West End Beach for swimming and paddleboarding.

Saturday evening: Soak in the hot tub; pop next door to Little Truckee Ice Creamery for dessert.
